Khartoum – Sudanese Prime Minister, Dr. Abdallah Hamdok emphasized, Friday, the importance of the return of Egypt and Ethiopia round the negotiations table, affirming the AU keenness to resolve the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue.
It is worth noting that a video conference was held including South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa (mediator), Egyptian President AbdulFattah Al-Sisi, Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed and Sudanese Prime Minister Dr. Abdallah Hamdo along with some African leaders to discus GERD issue.
Hamdok said that African issues would be resolved by Africans, affirming that striking a deal will protect the interests of the three countries (Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan)
He added that Sudan is not a mediator on GERD issue considering that the country will definite be affected if any risks on GERD construction occurred.
The said video meeting affirmed the importance of reaching an agreement that satisfies the three countries considering that more than 90% of the disputed pointed were resolved
The meeting resolved the resumption of negotiations on the level of technical committees to come up with recommendation within 2 weeks as proposed by Ethiopia.
Accordingly the filling of the dam will be delayed till then Meanwhile the office of Ethiopian Prime Minister announced that the government will start filling the Dam within two weeks time.
