The Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdallah Hamdok, and his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed, stressed that to create every effort to reach a successful conclusion to the tripartite negotiations on the Renaissance Dam under the auspices of the African Union.
The two sides directed the joint mechanisms between the two countries to continue working to reach a complementary formula and mutually acceptable solutions to border issues.
A joint statement following talks that took place between Hamdok and Abiy Ahmed, said that the two sides agreed to continue negotiations on the Renaissance Dam, leading to a formula with which everyone would win and make the dam a tool for regional integration between the riparian states.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday, said that the Renaissance Dam issue could be addressed amicably and that this solution will not be achieved except through friendly discussions with a “good intentions”
Sudanese Prime Minister Dr Abdullah Hamdok confirmed in a joint press conference with his Ethiopian counterpart that the Renaissance Dam is a promising project for Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia.
The Sudanese prime minister praised the role of Ethiopia during the crisis that his country went through after the revolution, saying, “Ethiopia had a prominent role in forming the transitional council for our country.”
The Ethiopian Prime Minister said, during joint talks with his Sudanese counterpart in Khartoum, that the fate of the two countries is intertwined and rooted, and the relations between them are historical and long-term strategy. He explained that the Ethiopians and the Sudanese are one people linked by common history and destiny.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister arrived in Sudan earlier Tuesday on a visit that lasted hours to discuss several files, foremost of which are the Renaissance Dam, security and border issues between the two countries.
During the last period, legal and operational disputes have emerged between Sudan and Egypt on the one hand, and Ethiopia on the other side, over the mandatory and amending mechanisms of dealing with the Renaissance Dam agreement that Ethiopia is building less than 20 kilometers from the common Sudanese border.
Sudan had previously demanded the necessity of adhering to the principles of international law regarding the equal use of water resources without causing harm to others.
On the border crisis, the two sides praised the progress achieved in addressing the outstanding issues regarding the border line and border areas.
Border incidents have occurred a lot during the past years, especially with the start of the autumn season, when about 1,700 Ethiopian farmers are working in areas within the Sudanese lands adjacent to the border with Ethiopia.
Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok said via twitter account that he welcomes the visit of the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. He tweeted that “We are looking forward to further strengthening our common interests and deepening the historical ties between our sisterly countries”.
Abiy Ahmed also tweeted that “ bonds of our historic ties are unbreakable. I reaffirmed Ethiopia’s solidarity with Sudan to PM Abdallah Hamdok in our discussions today. Our commitment to economic integration, joint progress and regional stability remains, as we explore opportunities to enhance bilateral ties”
