In a press release the US State Department said that Sudan’s State Sponsor of terrorism designation rescinded.
The statement of Michael R. Pompeo, Secretary of State reads:
“Today, Sudan’s designation as a state Sponsor of Terrorism is officially rescinded. This represents a fundamental change in our bilateral relationship toward greater collaboration and support for Sudan’s historic democratic transition. This acheivment was made possible by the efforts of Sudan’s civilian-led transitional government to chart a bold new course away from the legacy of the Bashir regime and, in particular, to meet the statutory and policy criteria for rescission.
He went on to say: “We commend the calls of the Sudanese people for freedom, peace, and justice, and we congratulate the members of the civilian-led transitional government for their courage in advancing the aspirations of the citizens they serve”
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Khartoum issued a statement in which it affirmed that the congressional period of 45 days has lapsed and the Secretary of State has signed a notification stating rescission of Sudan State Sponsor of Terrorism designation is effective as of today (December 14).
The US Ambassador congratulated Prime Minister Hamdok and Sudan’s civilian-led transitional government on Sudan’s removal from State Sponsor of Terrorism list, looking forward to a new era of close cooperation between the United States and Sudan to bring democracy, peace and prosperity.
The top three officials in the Sudanese transitional government i.e. President of the Sovereign Council,1st Lt. Gen. Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan, 1st Vice President, 1st lt. Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Daglo and Prime Ministers tweeted welcoming the decision and affirming their endeavors to upgrade the relations with the US Administration.
