Deputy Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) Ambassador Andrew Young has affirmed that democratic transition in Sudan is possible due to the courageous measures of the Sudanese people and their civilian-led transitional government.
Ambassador Young said in a press statement after his meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Abdalla Hamdok here today that the meeting affirmed the United States’ support for Sudan’s historic transition to civilian-led democratic government, and that it is welcomed as a full member of the international community.
Young said as US is a partner in this process, the US Treasury Secretary has just completed a $ 1 billion bridge loan to facilitate Sudan’s access to international financing, describing Juba Agreement on peace in Sudan that was signed in October 2020 as laying a foundation for peace and stability and paving the way for an end to decades-old conflicts.
He indicated that his visit as the first high-ranking official in the United States Africa Command is a step that promotes common interests in good governance, human rights and accountability, defeat terrorist threats and promote common prosperity.
He pointed out that that US is aware of the enormous challenges facing Sudan and that the economic challenges are great and exacerbated by the global pandemic of Corona, and overcoming security challenges will require perseverance, wise leadership, capabilities and strengthened partnerships.
