The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has expected rise in the influx of Ethiopian refugees to reach 200 thousand within the upcoming six months.
“From WFP prospective for these 200 thousand budget is about US$24.5 million as package from mobilized UN agencies to meet the needs of transportation which is very big issue” said WFP Representative and Country Director in Sudan, Hameed Nuru.
He added in an exclusive statement to Khartoum Today that the WFP provides immediate food and transport more from the borders to more camps that he has roughly about 60 thousand and the number is expected to increase within the coming few weeks as more influx is expected across the Sudanese/Ethiopian borders.
Nuru pointed out that the WFP is able now to transport food to the refugees’ camps and has enough foodstuff to feed 60 thousand persons, adding that the foodstuff includes wet food such as sorghum, lentils, oil and salt as well as high energy biscuits besides cooking pots, tents and shelters.
It is to be noted that earlier this week the WFP has appealed for funding to provide food and nutrition assistance to feed over 60,000 refugees who crossed the Sudanese/Ethiopian borders to enter into eastern Sudan territories in the recent few months.
WFP welcomed the Japanese contribution which amounted to US$800,000.
“WFP is grateful to the government and people of Japan for this generous contribution which comes at a critical time as the humanitarian situation at the borders remains dire” concluded Nuru.
