The Transitional Government (TG) of Sudan, is committing an strategic mistake by attaching a great deal of hopes on foreign assistance and aids to be provided by the Donors to Sudan according to the promises raised at the “International Partnership for Democratic Change in Sudan” held in Berlin on June 25, 2020 where Germany brought Sudan’s international partners, friends and neighbours together at one virtual table to ensure the long term success of the Sudan’s interim government.
At the conference where about 50 countries and organizations were interacted through digital video conference, came out with a commitment to help Sudan make its way to democracy. The partners pledged to boost Sudan’s political transformation by $ 1.8 billion.
However, these promises have not been fulfilled yet. It seems that the partners are influenced by the US hegemony in the new global system. Some reports say that realizing the pledge depends on a US resolution of terminating the remaining sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1990s – notably blacklisting Sudan as a terrorist-supporting country. Such a setback is so disappointing to the Sudanese people who believe that there is no logic of sustaining sanctions on Sudan where the regime which had committed those deeds is no longer in power since the Popular Uprising ousted Al-Beshir in April 11, 2020.
Hence, the TG has to look for strategic options and adopt pragmatic alternatives to make up for the loss of hope attached on the donors whose actions seem to be sluggish or may not respond immediately to the critical economic situation in Sudan.
It is regrettable for a country like Sudan, rich of so diverse resources, to be a poor country. It is advisable for the TG to look inside and see what are the proper workable policies and salvation programs are best to be adapted to the optimum utilization or the rich resources to achieve economic recovery.
To be short, the solutions are here – inside Sudan – not abroad. The TG have to change, not only persons, but rather policies along with the strong political will necessary for maintaining a coherent political system for a soft transitional process and a comprehensive strategic vision for radical transformation compatible with the target of the revolution. However, if we are to cling to foreign assistance, we may wait for a long time and may be in vain as the world economy upset by the negative impacts of the Corona Virus.
