The UK’s International Ambassador for Human Rights, Rita French, said that her country continued to see improvements in human rights across Sudan. Recent steps by the government, including better protection of women’s rights, and on freedom of religion or belief are welcome examples that we commend. We are pleased that cooperation with the OHCHR has led to the opening of an office in Khartoum.
“However, as the report details, challenges remain as Sudan transitions to democracy, particularly in conflict affected areas. Increases in intercommoned conflict, sexual violence, and the role of state security entities are of particular concern. “said Rita in speech before UN Human Rights Council 45
She appreciated her welcome to Sudan’s commitment in August 2019 to ensure accountability and encourage further progress, including signing and ratifying CEDAW.
“We also echo the Independent Expert’s call for sustained international engagement and support to help the government meet their responsibilities and commitment to change. The UK will continue to do so through our bilateral engagement, and support for OHCHR. “
