The recent tensions between the Tigray region and the federal government of Ethiopia resulted to an open military confrontation which might lead of sliding towards outright civil war.
The crisis will definitely lead to the destabilization of the whole region and not only the state of Ethiopia, and this will have its negative impact on the geopolitics of the whole world.
Obviously Sudan is the most affected state from what is going on in Ethiopia due to the joint borders between the two countries as two states in eastern Sudan i.e. Gedaref and Kassala have borders with Ethiopia
The clashes resulted to the flee of thousands of Ethiopians across the borders to the Sudanese territories a matter which will lead to increasing the numbers of refugees in the area to complicate the already complicated scene in eastern Sudan where the tribal conflicts are continuing since last July despite the official attempts to contain it but in vein.
The flow of the refugees will avail a conducive environment to human trafficker to practice their activities easily in the absence of strict security in the region, besides the expected domination of illegal migration.
It is high time for the Sudanese transitional government to take serious steps towards the issue to prevent sliding towards overwhelming destabilization in the country and in the region as a whole.
The Sudanese government must to beyond stereotypes and traditional stances which call for restraint to mediate between the Ethiopian rivals because what is happening in the Horn of Africa will have its direct effect regionally and internationally.
Khartoum needs to have its rapid response as the most qualified mediator between the Ethiopian rivals.
As for the Ethiopian PM, Abiy Ahmed, he must deal rationally with the issue instead of escalating the military tune considering that he was awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2019 for his efforts in achieving peace and international cooperation, particularly for his decisive initiative to resolve the borders’ conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.
The obligation of peace prize should encourage the Ethiopian PM to go ahead on peace efforts to achieve stability not only in his country but in the region as a whole and this could be through avoiding the past disastrous mistakes.
