Khartoum Today (KT) , which was launched on April 6th, as the first English online newspaper in Sudan, is something worth valuing and should be regarded as one of the fruits of the Sudanese December’s revolution. This is a new platform that has a lot of opportunities at the moment to reflect a different image on Sudan, after the three decades of the international absent.
KT, has seen light at the time when the media landscape in Sudan has significantly changed into what can be termed as “conducive operational environment”. Where there is a transitional government in place, which provide sort of a free environment for the media to carry out their role in educating, informing and entertaining the public. It wasn’t possible, during the period of the ousted President Omer Al Bashir’s rule. Many Sudanese journalists can testify to this factual point.
Now, the paper has a better chance in reaching out to millions of English readers across the country and around the World, to repaint that ugly image which had been reported by the media during Al Bashir’s administration. The outside world shall now get to know some facts about the situation in Sudan, in regards to Human Rights, social life, cultures and the rule of law. Many readers will now get the first hand information in English by the Sudanese journalists.
However, credibility, farness, factual reporting need to be put as the priority of any writing. Many online media outlets are now growing rapidly in a way that could be seen as competing with other traditional media outlets. Today, you can post face book live, or your use WhatsApp, from anywhere, and it can be seen immediately by everyone globally. This reality is challenging as each of the media outlet would want to break the news. Yes, break the news, but with facts.
I once again, seek this opportunity to congratulate the Editor in Chief, Mohammed Ali Fazari, all other crew of KT for the efforts put to bring this work a reality. We hope they continue to provide the public about development in the country, more especially on the current COVID-19 pandemic. People need to be safe and you have the responsibility to educate them how to be safe.
To be continued….
