The two years long Celebrations of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi were concluded on Thursday, 8 October 2020 in the grand finale at Al Salam Hotel, Khartoum which was inaugurated by HE Mr. Faisal Mohammed Saleh, Sudanese Minister of Culture & Information and Mr. Suleiman al-Dabailo, Chairman of the Peace Commission. Among other attendees were senior government officials; representatives of the political parties; diplomatic Corps; media-persons; Sudanese officials, individuals and community members who were involved in facilitating the celebrations over the last two years; and Indian Diaspora. Director of Asia Division from the MoFA, representative of the Sudan Congress Party and a no. of Ambassadors and a few DHMs attended, among others.
The Culture Minister in his inaugural speech lauded Gandhiji’s vision, philosophy and teachings and underlined that the Sudanese popular uprising which began in December 2018 was inspired by Gandhiji’s non-violence and peaceful approach and used similar methods of strike, sit-ins, long marches, civil resistance etc.
On the sidelines of the grand finale, a Vegetarian Food Festival, and display of the eco-friendly Khadi readymade apparels and other Khadi and village industries products; books by and on Gandhiji; and a photo exhibition on the Constitution Day- Indian Constitution, Constituent Assembly and Dr. B R Ambedkar were also organized.
